Need Help? Have you found a dog you want to help but cannot keep? Do you own a dog you can no longer take care of and want to help him find a loving home?
Here is how Putnam Pet Pals can help you.
First, can you foster him? To foster a dog for PPP, you will need to fill out a Foster application online by clicking Foster Application Form. You would be required to house train the dog, if he is not already, because PPP only adopts to indoor homes. We do not adopt dogs to be tied outside for the rest of their lives, nor to a small outdoor kennel. The dogs do not have to be perfectly obedience trained, but need to be socialized with your family and have basic doggie good manners. PPP does not have a kennel or a building like the Humane Society; this is why we use foster homes. PPP is a rescue, helping strays and unwanted dogs into permanent loving homes. Most of the dogs that come into our program are local (Putnam County) dogs, but not always. We are contacted daily from other pounds and Humane Societies asking us to help with their dogs. The dog will need to be “fixed” (neutered or spayed) and brought up to date on all vaccinations, heartworm checked and put on preventative medicine. No dog leaves our program before this is done, even very young puppies. This is all done at PPP expense but you may have to make the appointment and transport the dog to the vet. We use Leipsic Veterinary Clinic, Dr. Doug Walthers. We will need digital pictures and a short bio of the dog. If you do not have a digital camera, we can take the pictures. A bio is just a little information about him. How does he get along with kids? Cats? Does he ride well in the car? Does he have some sweet quality that would make him more adoptable? Or some bad habits that the new owner should know about? If you don’t have kids or cats, that’s ok, we just list unknown. We try not to place a very tiny dog with a family that has an energetic 3 year old that may unintentionally hurt the dog; we also don’t place a high energy jumpy dog with an elderly person. All adoption applications are screened. This means that the person that wants this particular dog must fill out an application, be willing to let us check with references and also check with their veterinarian and also be willing to permit a home visit. Which is just that, an experienced representative from our rescue will go to their house and make sure it is pet friendly. This is all done to help assure the dog's future is as good as we can make it. Some dogs are placed very quickly, just days after they are put on www.petfinder.com Others, usually larger mixed breeds, take longer. Unfortunately, large black dogs are the last to be adopted, and large breeds in general and hounds of any type in this area are slow to be adopted. For this reason, we are limited to how many we take into our program. Please understand we only have a very few regular foster homes and they are almost always full. That is why if you are not willing to foster the dog, we may not be able to help you.
